Lonely Cat @ East Coast
December 14, 2008
Went to labrador again last evening to meet some friend there. Water was too low to fish from breakwater so we move over to the jetty. Fish until 8pm and the park ranger came to inform of closing gate. Friends all decide to go home but not me. I go to the breakwater again but water still very low. Relax abit before decided to go east coast beach. Start around 10pm with two rods. Caught a marine cat fish around 12am when the tide was about to full. This fellow took my three small sotong hook on to a single hook bait. It was given to a friend who was at the jetty after I packup. Tackles used was a Surecatch Thunder rod 12ft pair with a Abu Red 7000C reel on a short snood bottom feeder rig.

Labrador Gaff Fish
December 13, 2008
Bedok jetty under renovation until march 2009 so have to look for another spot to fish. Decided to go labrador park to try as there is a newly built breakwater which I haven't fish before. The place was a former navy camp site and now it is a beautiful beach with toilet and shelter. It is not very snaggy here if you cast from the breakwater. But further out to the right side where "Long Ya mern" stone is, the whole stretch is snaggy. If you not careful and fast enough, most likely you will encounter snag when you wind back your line. I fish here yesterday night and got snag two time result in sinker lost. Try until 2am without any bite. Take rest in my mobile home and this morning move over to the jetty. Early morning not crowded so lots of space to fish. Decide to do surface fishing with cable car. Quickly jig for tamban and manage to get a few. The first tamban down landed a gaff fish almost immediately. This hungry fellow whack it and swallow the hook causing my Daiwa 47H reel alarm to sound. Without much problem I wind it back and used my Daiwa longcast rod to lift it up. It was given to a angler whom I known after the hook was removed.

He don't need any tackle to caught this fish....
November 25, 2008
Few weekend back Lai was fishing with his friends at the jetty. It was already 7 plus in the evening and the sky already turn dark. While he was standing around, suddenly he heard a "piak" sound behind him and when he turn around to look he saw a fish is jumping on the jetty floor. His immediate reaction is scolding "bloody LK(his friend) U want to lift up fish also don't throw it so near to me" But when he look at LK, he is doing nothing le. Lai take a closer look at the fish and saw no hook or line and nobody come to take it. Ehh...hahaha....he understand....this wolf herring about 1kg jump out of the water by itself. Quick hand quick leg Lai went to grab hold of it before LK come. Haha...free fish thrown up by the sea dragon king.

Longest "Eel"
May 30, 2008
Haha...caught this longest "eel" from the jetty few night ago. Manage to pump up this 20 feet long bamboo pole from the sea. It got entangle with my line. Lucky my rod n line is strong enough to bring it close to the jetty before I use my hand to lift it up. Estimate it weight more than 30 kg. Think its a record in term of it lenght caught by any landbase angler. haha..

Another Big One Gone.
April 13, 2008
Two big cobia was lost early this year. Now a shovel nose shark add to the list. Its seem not very lucky for big game anglers or is the fish getting smatter ?? Well,,,,I think the angler itself play a very important role. The right tackles used, the well prepare skill of fighting it out a big one at the jetty contribute to a success landing it.
It was a quiet night after a heavy afternoon downpour. Hong, Lai, Gilbert n Wei was fishing together on one side. I fish just beside them. They are catching squid and so do I. Tide was smooth with a nice current flow. Gilbert caught a 4kg Conger Eel around 10pm with the help of Hong pulling it up. Nobody want to take the eel home so we decide to offer for sale. I help by pricing it at 10 buck but there is no taker. The fish was finally given to Michael who come later.
It was already 2am in the morning. I was almost about to packup. Suddenly Lai found that Hong rod the line gone loose. He inform Hong n he immediately pickup n strike. Suddenly the fish just pull n run. Hong got into a tough battle. Everybody started to wind back their line to make space for the big battle. Lai ask me to prepare the gaff. I ask Hong how big the fish is but he seem too busy on the battle. From the bend of his Penn Slammer, I can tell it was quite a sizeable one. I prepare the big gaff. In my mind I was thinking of a big ray. When I ready n went over, I ask Hong what fish he think as he is the one fighting it. He answer me that the fish can swim quite freely. I immediately told him it could be a shovel nose ray. Awhile later the fish surface about 30 meter away from the jetty n we all can see the fin of a shovel nose with the help of the light from the squid lamp. The fish started to move toward the left n was just about ten meter away. I know the danger of it coming n told Hong to stand on the railing to prevent it from going under. But he didn't took my advice. The fish come close n dive deep down. Hong was seen struggling to steer it away. But it was already too late. His mainline touch the side of one of the pillar n cut. The fish was free again. Hong was stun for quite awhile. I know how painful it is to lost a big one. But that is all about landbase big game fishing. A single mistake U make n all the effort that U have been waiting for months or years are gone. From the look when it surface...the size was about a jetty stone bench lenght. That could easily weight more than 20kg....
This Shovelnose shark was caught by Hong in year 2005 n weigh 30kg. The one that lost last night is smaller.

Small Barracuda
March 26, 2008
Was home early this evening. Decide to have a go at the jetty. Cycle all the way from home. Tide was about to turn up. Casted out two sets of tackle with frozen tamban as bait on long snood bottom feeder rig. Bait was very lasting so didn't need to check often. Around 9pm decide to check on my Penn powergraph surf rod pair with a Daiwa 47H reel. It was a little heavy while I wind back. When my rig surface up, I feel some struggling at the end. It turn out to be a small barracuda. I used my rod to flick it up. Hahaha... Not bad for a short trip like this.
